There are many kinds of therapy on offer nowadays. Each one can be slightly different in its perspective or with the techniques it uses.
In general, a talk therapy session involves confidentially sharing your concerns with a person trained in advanced listening skills. A good therapist does not then give you advice. They instead reflect back to you what they heard you say, and ask good questions that help you discover for yourself the ways you’d like to move forward.
Some types of therapy might then include ‘homework’ or assignments for you to do between sessions, while other types simply involve showing up on time each week exploring whatever you choose to raise.
Some types of therapy will also utilise specific techniques and processes, such as EMDR for example (find out more here).
